Dog ownership is a commitment that begins before an owner even brings a dog home and can last 15 years or more. Responsible dog ownership requires time, attention, money and patience; someone not able to give all four of these things for their dog should rethink their reasons for wanting a dog. Also, an owner should have their dog involved in many activities to exercise the dog’s natural instincts and provide the dog with an enjoyable and fulfilling life. See the Dog Events section of our website to learn more about events and activities you can enjoy with your dog.
Caring for a dog means providing daily love and attention, food, water, grooming, training and a clean living area for the dog. An owner should also examine their dog for any problems and watch for changes in temperament and activity level. If a problem is found, immediate care is needed and a veterinarian may need to be called.
Dog owners also need to understand their role within their communities as representatives for their dogs and other owners. A good owner socializes their dog to safely interact with humans and other animals, protects their dog from having access to neighboring property and trains their dog to stop uncontrolled barking. Dog owners should be good neighbors to help avoid problems between dogs and neighbors.
